Chikungunya Outbreak Alert: Seychelles Travel Health Notice

Chikungunya Outbreak in Seychelles

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 2 Travel Health Notice for Seychelles due to an active chikungunya outbreak in the region.

About Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes (the same vectors that carry dengue and Zika). The disease causes fever, joint pain, muscle aches, headache, and rash. While the illness is rarely fatal, joint pain can persist for weeks to months in some individuals.

Risk to Travelers

Travelers to Seychelles during this outbreak period face elevated risk of chikungunya infection. The outbreak status indicates sustained or increasing transmission in the community.

Recommended Prevention Measures

  • Use insect repellent: Apply EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535, 2-undecanone, or para-menthane-diol
  • Wear protective clothing: Long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when Aedes mosquitoes are most active
  • Stay in accommodations: Choose lodging with air conditioning and window/door screens
  • Avoid outdoor activity: Limit time in areas with high mosquito populations
  • Mosquito control: Use bed nets and environmental controls in your lodging space

When to Seek Medical Care

Travelers who develop fever, joint pain, or rash during travel or within 2 weeks of returning should consult a healthcare provider and mention their travel to Seychelles.
