Chikungunya Outbreak Alert – Mayotte
The CDC has issued a Level 2 travel alert for Mayotte, a French overseas collectivity in the Indian Ocean, due to an ongoing chikungunya outbreak.
What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans through bites from infected Aedes mosquitoes (primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). The disease is characterized by fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and rash. While not typically fatal, symptoms can be debilitating and persist for weeks to months.
Transmission & Risk
Mosquito-borne transmission occurs primarily during daylight hours, particularly during dawn and dusk. The outbreak status indicates sustained or increasing case numbers in Mayotte, warranting heightened awareness for travelers.
Protective Measures
Prevention focuses on mosquito avoidance:
- Use EPA-registered insect repellents (DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone)
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during peak mosquito hours
- Stay in air-conditioned or screened accommodations
- Treat clothing and gear with permethrin
- Avoid areas with standing water where mosquitoes breed
Healthcare Considerations
No vaccine currently exists for chikungunya. Treatment is supportive, focusing on symptom management. Travelers with fever, joint pain, or rash following return from Mayotte should seek medical evaluation and inform healthcare providers of travel history.
Travel Recommendations
The Level 2 alert indicates travelers should exercise increased caution. Those with underlying health conditions, pregnant individuals, and immunocompromised persons should consult healthcare providers before travel to assess individual risk.
