Vaccinations Before Traveling to Hungary
Hungary is located in Central Europe and has relatively high medical standards. However, since infections uncommon in Japan may be present, pre-travel vaccinations are an important preparation. This article explains, from a pharmacist's perspective, the necessary and recommended vaccinations, immunization schedules, and cost estimates in detail.
Essential Vaccinations for Hungary Travel
There are no vaccinations legally required for entry into Hungary. However, considering infection risks, the following vaccines are strongly recommended.
1. Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
Vaccine name: Priorix (MMRV) or M-M-RVaxPro (MR vaccine)
Reason for recommendation: Measles outbreaks remain present in Europe, and Hungary is no exception. When many travelers were not included in mass vaccination programs, infection risk increases.
Immunization schedule:
- Second dose given 4 weeks or more after the first dose
- Aim to complete at least 2 weeks before travel
Pharmacist's note: Those born before 1966 may have natural immunity. However, we recommend that travelers undergo antibody testing (measles and rubella IgG) to confirm.
2. Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap/Td)
Vaccine name: Boostrix (3-component combination) or Triaxis (Td + pertussis)
Reason for recommendation: Tetanus bacteria are widely present in soil, and trauma or activity-related risks are possible in Hungary.
Immunization schedule:
- Booster vaccination every 10 years is recommended
- If 10 or more years have passed since the last vaccination, one additional dose is needed
Recommended Vaccinations for Hungary Travel
1. Hepatitis A Vaccine
Vaccine name: Havrix, VAQTA (US name)
Reason for recommendation: Food risk due to different sanitary environments. Particularly recommended if street food or raw food consumption is anticipated.
Immunization schedule:
- Second dose given 6–12 months after the first dose
- Ideally start 6 months or more before the planned travel date
- Partial immunity is obtained with the first dose alone
Cost: Approximately 6,000–8,000 yen per dose
Pharmacist's note: When simultaneous vaccination with hepatitis B is considered, using Twinrix (hepatitis A + B combined) is efficient.
2. Hepatitis B Vaccine
Vaccine name: Heplisav, Engerix
Reason for recommendation: Prevention of infection from needle stick injuries at medical facilities, sexually transmitted infection risks, and the need for blood transfusion.
Immunization schedule:
- Standard schedule: Day 0, 1 month, 6 months
- Accelerated schedule: Day 0, 7 days, 21 days (when urgent)
- Starting 8 weeks or more before travel is recommended
Cost: Approximately 5,000–7,000 yen per dose
3. Poliomyelitis (Quadrivalent) Vaccine
Vaccine name: Tetraxim (IPV)
Reason for recommendation: Risk in Hungary itself is low; however, strongly recommended if travel to surrounding regions (Middle East, Afghanistan) is planned.
Immunization schedule:
- Booster vaccination every 10 years
- Varies depending on past vaccination history
Cost: Approximately 4,000–6,000 yen per dose
4. Rubella Vaccine (Single or Combination)
Refer to the MRV vaccine section above.
Additional Vaccines Based on Specific Activities
| Activity | Recommended Vaccine | Priority | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outdoor activities/Hiking | Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) | High | Spring–fall activities require special attention |
| Frequent animal contact | Rabies | Medium | Post-exposure prophylaxis also possible |
| Long-term stay (3+ months) | Tuberculosis screening | Medium | Screening, not vaccination |
| Rural area activities | Leptospirosis prevention | Low | No direct vaccine; antibiotic prophylaxis |
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Vaccine name: Encepur, FSME-Immun
Reason for recommendation: Hungary is included in Europe's TBE risk areas. Strongly recommended for those planning spring–fall hiking or camping activities.
Immunization schedule:
- Standard schedule: Day 0, 1–3 months, 5–12 months
- Ideally start 3 months or more before travel
- Accelerated schedule if urgent: Day 0, 14 days, monthly addition thereafter
Cost: Approximately 8,000–10,000 yen per dose (3 doses recommended)
Pharmacist's note: TBE vaccination is available at travel clinics within Hungary; however, we recommend vaccination before departure.
Rabies Vaccine
Vaccine name: Rabippur, Imovax Rabies
Reason for recommendation: For activities involving animal contact (particularly stray dog encounter risk). Pre-exposure prophylaxis simplifies post-exposure response.
Immunization schedule:
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis: Day 0, 7 days, 21–28 days
- Completion 3 weeks or more before travel is necessary
Cost: Approximately 10,000–12,000 yen per dose
Sample Vaccination Immunization Schedules
Pattern 1: Minimum Recommended Vaccines (Can start 4 weeks before travel)
Week 0: MMR dose 1, Tdap (omit if within 10 years) Week 4: MMR dose 2 Week 2 onward: Hepatitis A dose 1 (optional)
Pattern 2: Comprehensive Recommended Vaccines (3 months before travel recommended)
Month 0:
- MMR dose 1
- Hepatitis A dose 1
- Hepatitis B dose 1
- Tdap (if needed)
Month 1:
- MMR dose 2
- Hepatitis B dose 2
- TBE dose 1 (if outdoor activities planned)
Month 6:
- Hepatitis A dose 2
- Hepatitis B dose 3
- TBE dose 3 (5 months after previous dose)
Pattern 3: High-Risk Activity Response (4+ months recommended)
Incorporate rabies (Day 0, 7, 21) and tick-borne encephalitis accelerated schedule in addition to Pattern 2 above.
Pharmacist's note: Simultaneous vaccination with multiple vaccines is safe and actually recommended. However, 4-week intervals are required between live vaccines. Almost all vaccines used in Hungary are inactivated vaccines, which is advantageous because interval restrictions are minimal.
